Look 10 Years Younger With These Three Skincare Steps

We believe the key to maintaining a healthy, luminous complexion can't be found by fighting the aging process. The reality is, another year will inevitably pass. You will age. Your skin will age. But aging skin does not have to be synonymous with dull, lackluster, unhealthy skin. Your skin can glow at every age—if you let it.

Maybe we should replace "Look 10 Years Younger" with "Look Your Best at [Whatever] Age." Because that's really the key to a bright, youthful complexion: working with your skin's natural mechanisms and enhancing its potential at every stage of life. Time isn't the enemy, if you know how to use it wisely. In that spirit, these are our three golden rules to keeping your skin at its best and brightest—whatever the age. 

1. Perform weekly acid peels

We get it—the words "acid peel" sound incredibly abrasive and unnerving when used in the context of skincare. But once you hit your early 20s and your skin's natural processes begin to slow, you'll want these powerful exfoliators in your arsenal. Leave behind those mental images of sore, beet-red faces and days spent in isolated recovery—the modern acid peel is quick and painless, with post-redness lasting just 5-10 minutes.

Think of the acid peel as your skin's weekly deep clean, eliminating dead and damaged skin cells and promoting cell turnover to leave you with new, baby soft skin. By dissolving that top layer of aged skin, chemical peels unclog pores, improve skin texture, minimize hyper-pigmentation, soften fine lines, and promote moisture retention. Our skin performs all these tasks naturally when we're younger, but as we age, it needs a bit of assistance. Acid peels serve as that motivational push.

You'll want to start off slow, testing out low concentrations of alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) based on your skin type. Typically, dermatologists recommend BHAs for oily, blemish-prone skin and AHAs for older, sun-damaged complexions. But take heed—once you join the acid peel club, you'll need to fully commit to both #2 and #3 below. Post-peel treatment and care is just as important as the peel itself.  

2. Load up on sunscreen, every day

You don't need to be a skincare maven to know this. Lathering on SPF every morning should be second nature, akin to brushing your teeth. You just do it. Every. single. day. Rain or shine. It doesn't matter if you only step outside for a mere 30 seconds over the course of the entire day—daily sunscreen is a must. As for specifics, we recommend using an SPF of at least 30 with a UVA rating of at least four stars to ensure full protection. If you don't see any UVA stars on the packaging, look for the words "broad/full spectrum" or "UVA" with a circle around it.

When it comes to the application process, your sunscreen should be the very last step in your skincare routine before applying makeup. Be sure to let your sunscreen sit and absorb for a few minutes before picking up those brushes. And although this last bit might be hard to abide by, we seriously encourage you to top off your sunscreen every 2-3 hours, especially if you're spending extended periods of time outside. Pop a travel-size tube in your purse to make re-applying painless and to serve as a regular reminder. It may be a nuisance, but your future self will thank you. By now we know you get the point, but we'll say it one more time to really drive it home: never skip the sunscreen

3. Use a nighttime moisturizer with potent humectants
