How to Treat Dry Hands

One thing that is common among a lot of people is dry hands. Although our hands are driest during the winter period, there are some people who might have dry hands all throughout the year. Regardless of when and why we have them, it’s definitely something that everyone wants to get rid of. As it turns out there are several things that you can do that will help you get rid of dry hands once and for all.

What causes dry hands?

The most common cause for dry hands is often the dry air that can mostly be felt during the cold winter periods. Apart from that, people who wash their hands constantly or work in a position where they have to have their hands under water for a longer period of the day can often experience dry hands. On top of that, people who work with chemicals can often have dry hands as well, since the harsh chemicals can damage your skin and absorb the moisture in your hands, leaving them feeling dry.

How can you treat dry hands?

Don’t forget your moisturizer

Just like the rest of your body, your hands need to be moisturized too. However, don’t just use any moisturizer you find at home, but pick one that is specifically designed to cure your dry hands. Look for a thick moisturizer that can soothe your skin and soften your dry hands. Apply the moisturizer as frequently as you can so as to retain the moisture in your hands. If you have very dry hands make sure you take a bigger amount of cream massage it into your hands and don’t be afraid to put a little bit more. There is absolutely nothing bad about putting a little bit of more moisturizer on the areas that seem to need it the most. Always make sure you apply it before going to sleep as well as during the day so as to achieve maximum results.

Don’t wash your hands in hot water

For people who love showering in hot water, this might be the most difficult thing to do. However, it’s a well-known fact that by constantly washing your hands with hot water, you’re dehydrating your skin, making it feel drier than it already was. So, instead of going for hot water, when you’re washing your hands, always make sure you wash them in warm or lukewarm water and don’t soak them too much.

Wear gloves

The best protection from the elements is to wear gloves. However, this is for people who live in drier and colder places, and for everyone else during the winter period. One of the main causes for dry hands is the cold, dry water, so not wearing gloves can actually make your hands drier. If you want to avoid having rough and dry hands altogether then don’t forget to wear your gloves.

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate

Something that we often to do our face, but forget to do to our hands is exfoliating. Well, as it turns out, this is a crucial step if you want your hands to feel smooth and gentle. The reason for dry and rough hands is often the presence of dead skin which can easily be eliminated by using a good exfoliant. However, if you’re on a budget and don’t feel like spending a small fortune on some overly priced exfoliant, then you can just make it on your own with products that you can find in your own kitchen. One mixture that people actually do quite often and that has proven results is mixing sugar and olive oil. Just like everything else olive oil is a real miracle worker. by mixing these two you create a paste that you can later exfoliate your hands with and get rid of all the dead skin that makes your hands feel dry and rough.

Stay away from soaps

Although everyone washes their hands with a soap, it’s important that we don’t overdo it. Most of the soaps that we use contain preservatives and fragrances that can more often than not dry our hands even more. Therefore, although we can’t tell people to stop washing their hands, maybe try to use just water instead of constantly reaching for your soap.

Regardless if it’s due to the weather, your working conditions or something else, dry hands is something that can happen to anyone. If you don’t take care of your hands and don’t pay enough attention to how you wash or maintain them, they can just become dry and rough.
